How to Start Your Training Program Right

One of the most common questions we get is “what’s a good program to get started with?”

This is a very valid question and there is no right or wrong answer. The most important thing to remember is the training program should be tailored to your individual needs.

Questions to ask before starting a program:

  1. Does this program align with my training goals?

This may seem simple, but the majority of people in the gym are following a program out of routine, not intention. Once you decided what you want to achieve with your body, determining the ‘best’ program for you becomes pretty straightforward.

  1. Does this suit my lifestyle?

The MOST important thing when it comes to a program is ensuring that you can maintain this style of training for a minimum of 6-12 weeks. If not, it may be a great program, just not for you.

With that in mind, it’s vital to consider how many days a week you can realistically train and also take into account your ability to recover. If you can barely walk after day 1 and you’re training 6 days a week, you’re in for a bad time and will likely end up injured as a result.

The only reason we train is to recover and stimulate new growth/strength.

  1. Do you really want to achieve this goal?

Although simple, if we don’t really want something, we’ll quickly give up and feel demotivated after yet another unsuccessful attempt at a new program/training style.

How many times have you heard someone say “I tried that and it didn’t work for me”?
Truth is, there are thousands of amazing free programs and all of them can work for you, but only if they align with your goals/schedule and interests.

If you want to become a great squatter, start squatting 4 x a week and you’re going to get very good at the movement faster than you ever thought possible. But if you don’t enjoy squatting and feel exhausted all the time, this is isn’t going to be a good program for you.

We encourage you to stop ‘exercising’ and start training with an intention if you really want to see your body start changing for the better.

A little planning can go a very long way and asking yourself these 3 simple questions before jumping into a program will make a big difference in your training plan.
